Our moment has arrived. Four years older but, how much wiser we
will soon find out – Sepp certainly wants another crack at it. It seems like it
was yesterday when Rayment took out
the title in South Africa, and no doubt wished the Euro's never happened
as Jason T climbed the submit. Both are back with some expectations to achieve what has
to date been the impossible.
Twenty four years ago football4mates launched and we have yet to
see an Archon reclaim, let alone defend, their title. I must admit that I feel
a tad like the English, which itself is a paradox. Having created the
competition and winning it once (Italia 90) all the way back when there was no
internet for the masses. It's been a history of plenty of hype but a proportion
of flop. But this time, this time, well there is no expectation with the
acceptance that there are simply better players. You see, the similarity with
the English football team is incredible. Enough on that.
We have seven former Archons in this tournament plus some of the
familiar challengers hoping to go that extra length. We have a couple
of fresh names added to the list including Alexander Rex,
who we expect to perform wisely with his thorough evaluation of past records
and the Brazilian climate. Finally we are welcoming the next generation of f4m
players seeking glory. Aramis will be the youngest player to grace our
competition. However being under aged, he will not be eligible for any
financial reward but is eligible to claim the Archon title. Laugh as you wish
but the World Cup magazine is out and he's reading the stats. Plus I'm getting
peppered with questions. Also, patriotism does figure in the mind of a
child.
So, will the Archon defend his title, can a former winner achieve
what has to date been impossible, will a challenger break the shackles of
disappointment and claim the honor, or will it be a rookie? One month of
football, 63 games of nerves, patience and clear headed thinking. Luck
ultimately has nothing to do with it.
